Are you looking to double your SEO traffic quickly and effectively? Look no further than leveraging existing content. In this article, we will explore the easiest strategy to boost your SEO traffic by optimizing and improving your existing content. By focusing on what you already have, you can save time, enhance user experience, and demonstrate continuous improvement. Let’s dive into the power of utilizing established content to drive significant SEO growth!

About six months ago, I started working on one of our blogs to see if I could increase its SEO traffic. Its rankings had gone down a lot over the last few years, and I quickly realised that many other blogs had taken my article, rewrote it quickly, and ranked higher than ours in search engines. So, I went about looking for a way to outrank them.

You see, my article had been online for a long time, and I had lots of data I could look at, so that’s where I started—looking at my SEO data.

Before sharing this strategy, I want to prove that I got these results.

Below is a screenshot from our SEMrush account so you can see the results of this strategy.

It shows that over the last few months my keywords in Google have doubled. I should also add that during this time, I didn’t add new articles, in fact I removed quite a lot. So, these new rankings reflect the work of the strategy I am about to share with you.

The strategy: Focus on search terms that you rank between 3 – 10 for.

The difference in traffic between ranking 10th and 1st is enormous!

When it comes to search engine optimization, focusing on search terms that you rank between 3 and 10 for is essential because these keywords are already performing relatively well but still have room for improvement. By targeting these keywords, you can work to push them higher in the search engine results pages (SERPs) and potentially increase your organic traffic.

To get started, go to your SEMRush account, search for your domain, and then click Organic keywords under the domain analytics section.

From here, filter by position and search for between ranks 3 and 10.

Now, you will see all the search terms you rank for in Google with these rankings, in order of how much traffic each gets you.

Now, I would re-optimize each article on your website for these search terms. You will likely discover that each search term is similar to your topic, except you never use that phrase in your article. Maybe they are related questions that you never answer.

Let me show you an example of this on IncomeDiary.

I have an article called 10 Article Headline Examples That Got Us 10 Million Readers

I search this URL for rankings between 3 and 10.

One search term that is currently at number 7 is: headline ideas.

This search term gets me about ten visitors and is searched 1000 times a month.

The thing is, at no point in this article am I talking about ‘headline ideas’. So I needed to edit the article and create a section for ‘How to discover great headline ideas’. Now, I will quickly move up in the search results and go from getting ten visitors a month to quickly over 100.

This takes all of 5 minutes. For a few hours of work following this method a few months ago, I increased search traffic by over 100%

A must-try for anyone who needs more traffic!

Taking this strategy further:

I found that some articles had as many as 20 rankings between 3 and 10. So, if I could increase the traffic by only 10 visitors each, that’s 200 more visitors for each article every month! Of course, sometimes there’s a lot more traffic than that.

Now, adding the content is different for every keyword. Sometimes, I added new sections to the articles, and sometimes, I rewrote what I already had.

For example, I have an article about the founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos. I noticed that one of the keywords was: What inspired Jeff Bezos to start Amazon? So, I rewrote a section with this headline

Other times, I added FAQs to the end of the action and addressed these keywords there.

For example, we have an article about how to create YouTube videos, and I noticed that we ranked in the top 10 for the search term ‘what to post on YouTube’. I added a FAQ section at the end of the article and answered this question there.

Bonus tip: Focus on pages that already have backlinks

In SEMrush, click Backlink Analytics, now search your domain and click Indexed Pages.

This page will show you all your pages with the most links. You want this information because the more links a page has, the easier it will be to rank it high in the search engines.

By focusing on these pages first, you are basically giving yourself even higher chances of success.

Why it’s better to focus on existing content then create new content

Existing content already has a foundation: When you focus on existing content, you already have a starting point. You can analyze its performance, identify areas for improvement, and build upon what’s already there.

Saves time on ideation and creation: Creating new content from scratch can be time-consuming. By focusing on existing content, you can save time on brainstorming new ideas and creating content, allowing you to allocate resources more efficiently.

Utilizes existing authority and backlinks: Established content may have already accumulated backlinks and authority. By improving its SEO, you can leverage these existing assets to boost its ranking and visibility.

Addresses user intent and feedback: Existing content may have received feedback or insights from users. By focusing on it, you can address user intent, improve user experience, and tailor the content to better meet the needs of your audience.

Demonstrates continuous improvement: By actively optimizing existing content, you demonstrate to search engines and users that you are committed to providing valuable, up-to-date information. This can positively impact your site’s overall SEO and credibility.

Conclusion: what you should do right now?

With SEO, results take time. Going through my old blogs took me days to make all the necessary updates. Then, there was nothing for several weeks, and traffic even went down a bit because I deleted some pages.

Then, a few months later, traffic increased by over 100%.

So, if you want results in your business, you must focus on today for if you want results tomorrow (or next month).
